In March of 1952 Mercedes-Benz tested their prototype 300SL 'gullwing' on the autobahn between Stuttgart and Heilbronn. It was intended for racing and had many advanced features. It had its engine canted over to one side to allow for a lower nose, and a stiff highsided multitube chassis that couldn't accomodate normal doors.

The production version arrived in 1954 at the urging of the US Mercedes importer. His prediction of success in America proved accurate; 1200 of the 1400 gullwings built were sold in the USA. Many classic car events in 2012 are marking the gullwing's 60th birthday. Get ready for lots of magazine features on these beautiful and innovative cars.

Premium ClassiXXs has already done this subject in silver, but the black paint and red interior adds some real drama to an already dramatic automobile. Yours for $270.00.
